Reliable on-site medical oxygen generation for Uganda’s regional hospitals

Oxygen generator system in Uganda, Africa

Medical oxygen is a fundamental part of hospital care. It supports emergency care, surgery, intensive care, and the treatment of patients with respiratory conditions. To strengthen oxygen availability across Uganda’s regional hospitals, the Ministry of Health launched an initiative to establish on-site oxygen production at selected healthcare facilities. Working together with Global Gases, OXYMAT supplied two PSA oxygen plants for Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and Mubende Regional Referral Hospital. The project supports Uganda’s efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and contributes to expanding reliable medical oxygen generation across East Africa.

As part of its efforts to improve regional healthcare services, Uganda’s Ministry of Health sought to establish local oxygen production at two regional referral hospitals. The objective was to strengthen oxygen availability through on-site PSA oxygen generation capable of supporting the daily needs of the hospitals while benefiting surrounding healthcare facilities.

To manage the project, the Ministry appointed Global Gases to oversee the delivery, installation, and maintenance of the systems, while OXYMAT supplied the PSA oxygen technology.

OXYMAT supplied two PSA oxygen plants, each with a production capacity of 100 Nm³/h, designed to produce medical oxygen directly on-site.

Using Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology, the systems provide hospitals with a continuous source of oxygen, reducing dependence on external deliveries while supporting daily clinical operations.

Throughout the project, OXYMAT worked closely with Global Gases and the Ministry of Health, providing technical support and ensuring the supplied systems met the project’s requirements.

Adrian Kucharek, Project Manager at OXYMAT, highlighted the importance of close cooperation throughout the project:

“Working together with Global Gases and the Ministry of Health allowed us to deliver a solution that meets the project’s requirements while supporting long-term operation and knowledge transfer”

The installation was carried out by Global Gases with technical support from OXYMAT.

To support long-term operation, OXYMAT provided comprehensive training for representatives from both Global Gases and the Ministry of Health. The training covered installation, operation, servicing, and maintenance of the PSA oxygen plants, helping local personnel develop the knowledge required to operate and maintain the systems after commissioning.

Through close collaboration between all parties involved, the installation was completed successfully, and both oxygen plants became operational at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and Mubende Regional Referral Hospital.

The two PSA oxygen plants now provide a reliable supply of medical oxygen and medical air for the two regional hospitals, supporting patient care and strengthening local oxygen production capacity.

The successful implementation has also laid the foundation for future expansion. Following the completion of the project, the Ministry of Health announced plans to establish 15 additional oxygen plants as part of its continued efforts to improve oxygen availability across Uganda.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Owen Muhimbise from Uganda’s Ministry of Health commented:

“We at the Ministry of Health Uganda are looking forward to a long-term healthy working relationship with OXYMAT considering this big investment in your product.”

The project demonstrates how collaboration between healthcare authorities, local partners, and technology providers can strengthen access to medical oxygen.

By combining the Ministry of Health’s initiative, Global Gases’ local project management, and OXYMAT’s PSA oxygen technology, the project has established reliable on-site oxygen production at two regional referral hospitals while creating a foundation for future expansion of medical oxygen infrastructure in Uganda.

Since 1978, OXYMAT has specialized in the design and manufacture of on-site PSA oxygen and nitrogen generation systems. Today, the company has more than 7,000 installations worldwide, supplying reliable gas generation solutions to industries including healthcare, where continuous access to medical oxygen is essential for patient care.
